FINALISING

MAKING/CRITIQUE

At first the chalkboards weren't completely recognisable after asking some peers so I added actual drawings on top to give it that feel. At first I had the tagline Support local but after talking to the tutor it could've been more resolved so it is no changed to 'Support Local Business'.

Looking at how I started off and how that idea developed into this poster shows how much you can do if you keep working on it. There are so many ways and ideas to come about each of these issues. When i first started this project I thought I would end up painting something but instead I have expanded my knowledge and skills. I am more confident working with illustrator than I used to be. If I look at my poster now there definitely is a visual movement going from top left to bottom right.

DEVELOPMENT & REFINING

IDEATE/ CRITIQUE/ MAKING

After getting critique I have gone about to make my poster imagery from scratch using illustrator and photoshop. It looks more refined that way. I'm still struggling with the composition and a tagline that makes the overall poster work. Right now i'm more interested in getting the imagery done and dusted. If I am incorporating the 'domino effect' then there should be a good flow and sense of rhythm.

Instead of having the actual dominos I'm thinking of using those old chalkboards people use and put outside their shops.

INTERIM PRESENTATION

CRITIQUE

Today's class was short and simple. The idea of getting together with people who haven't seen your work is good. There is more room for feedback and critique that way. I need to work on my posters compositionally more and play around with tag lines/type. Type itself requires another layer of research.

Painting instead of refining my idea digitally has a different effect. It isn't as clean and tidy as it would be digitally. I work better with paint so I will carry on with this media.

GETTING CLOSER TO AN OUTCOME

UNDERSTAND / IDEATE / MAKING

Our critique is tomorrow which is something I am definitely looking forward to. I have made 4 mock-ups ready for tomorrow. They are mostly painted and collage but I don't think that will be my final choice of media. I just find painting much easier and also I need to show colour so people who look at it can actually get what I was going for. I haven't added any words because I am struggling for that area of the poster.

Out of the 4 there are two that I prefer more. Instead of going for the overall superstores, I have pin pointed Ronald McDonald because pretty much everyone can associate with him.
Right now I need to pay more attention to how the wording and imagery will go hand in hand otherwise my poster will be really shit.

MORE RESEARCH AND THUMBNAILS

UNDERSTAND / IDEATE / MAKING / CRITIQUE

I didn't even know if I was on the right track because my thumbnails didn't even make sense. They weren't strong enough to portray my viewpoint against superstores. I really needed to talk to the tutors which I finally did.

Turns out my thumbnails weren't going anywhere but the research I had done was better for what I wanted to show. I probably should've done that in the first place but still constructive criticism is good to get me on track and focus.

Trying not to be too literal but not too metaphorical that no one gets it is hard to show. The tagline/wording has to also not give it away so much which is also tricky.

THUMBNAILS

UNDERSTAND / DEFINE / IDEATE

After brainstorming ideas and vocabulary for my specific store, I have begun drawing thumbnails for my poster. So far they are very literal and don't hold much depth. Looking at visual metaphors online is helping me understand the idea of rhetoric.

This image was pretty cool to come across…

RESEARCH & FORMING A POINT OF VIEW
Understand/Define/Ideate

From the choices given, I have decided to go for the superstores topic. I can closely relate to this topic and can even see it happening where I live. Smaller stores are just as necessary as superstores because if they keep dying off, our economy will fall. We become a huge flock of sheep running towards the same things, the same sales but that is also the loss of individuality.

I have brainstormed ideas for this particular topic both pro and anti along with the advantages/disadvantages of both. I then began to search for imagery that could suit where I'm heading with this relating to the design vocal we learnt in today's lesson. With the images/visual representations I identified emotive qualities that could relate back to superstores and how they're killing off smaller stores.

My next step is to list my key words that describe my argument and draw thumbnails of how I can show this.
